The afternoon before the famous two minutes
The Derby sends three-year-old Thoroughbreds a mile and a quarter around Churchill Downs. It’s over in about two minutes, but the earlier races, the hats and the company are part of the occasion. Arrive early enough to enjoy the track before the crowd turns its attention to the starting gate.
Plan for Derby Day or the full weekend
The Kentucky Derby is scheduled for Saturday, May 1, 2027, at Churchill Downs. The Kentucky Oaks is Friday, April 30. If you’re doing both, tell us when you’d like to arrive Friday and whether you’re heading to the track or your hotel first. For a Saturday day trip, we’ll work backward from when you want to enter the venue.
Best airport for your arrival
Louisville Muhammad Ali International (SDF) is our first choice for Churchill Downs. Bowman Field (LOU) is an alternative for suitable aircraft. We’ll confirm handling and event procedures for your dates.
Decide what happens after the last race
Tell us if you want to head straight back to the aircraft or stay in Louisville for dinner. We’ll plan for the time it takes to leave Churchill Downs, meet your driver and reach the private terminal. If you’re bringing hat boxes or garment bags, share the count so we can check how they’ll travel with the rest of your luggage.
Make a day of Churchill Downs
The Derby is the finale of a full day at the track. If you want lunch, earlier races and time to see the grounds, plan to arrive well before the Derby itself. Louisville is a special-event traffic market that can have FAA procedures during Derby week. We’ll check any applicable reservations and parking at Louisville Muhammad Ali International or Bowman Field, and discuss a Friday arrival if Saturday gives you too little room.
